National History Month is observed to increase awareness of local history, promote history in general to the local community and encourage all members of the community to participate. In an effort to celebrate the occasion, we invite you to join us for an interesting program on our town’s history, to take place after our monthly membership meeting, May 12th at 7 p.m. The presentation will be given by Pete Boulay, a local historian and author of the book, “The Lost City of Gladstone: A History of Maplewood from its beginnings” (1997).

Few people realize there is a “Ghost Town” right in Maplewood. At one time in the 1800’s, a city was being planned, one that would “rival St. Paul”. Boulay’s presentation will explore some interesting details of this lost city and the beginnings of Maplewood.

Date/Time: Wednesday, May 12th, 7 p.m.
Place: Bruentrup Heritage Farm, 2170 East County Road D., Maplewood (weather-permitting, meeting & presentation will be inside the barn at the farm).

Click here for map & directions

About the author/presenter:
Pete became interested in Maplewood’s history through working at a Maplewood Nursing Home and volunteering for the area’s elderly as a student at Hill Murray High School. He wrote his first draft for a college project. After he graduated and settled in the Maplewood area he became involved in the Maplewood Historical Society and became its president. Pete updated and rewrote the book and it is now published and available through Maplewood Area Historical Society for $15.00, Phone 651-748-9009. Pete continues his interest in the history of Maplewood through his involvement in historical societies, events and projects. He certainly has helped preserve Maplewood’s history.
